RESUMO

Avicenna authored The Canon of Medicine, a principal medical textbook for over 600 years. Our primary goal is to systematically review and translate relevant portions of The Canon in its original Arabic and correlate to Sardo's 2014 translation, focusing on otolaryngology, to present an accurate representation of Avicenna's impact and highlight notable discrepancies. Secondarily, we aim to review the literature for citations discussing Avicenna's contributions to otolaryngology and identify misinterpretations. Notably, Avicenna may have described the shape of the cochlea 500 years before its believed discovery in humans by Eustachius (1552) and Falloppius (1561). There are also obscurities in Avicenna's descriptions of the etiology of epistaxis and airway management. It is essential to remain critical of historical texts and safeguard the accurate propagation of information to preserve the integrity of historical context and timelines of scientific advancement.

Publication is the key means by which science spreads. The purpose of scientific journals is to publish novel and quality articles. The editors of the journals evaluate the content of the manuscripts by submitting them to a process called «peer review», considered today the gold standard to guarantee the adequate publication of scientific articles. A well-crafted and critical peer-review report is a treasure for both authors and editors. In the present manuscript we will examine the key aspects of the peer review process. We will begin by explaining what exactly this process consists of and since when it has existed, and then clarifying why it is so important. Then we will argue why we should want to be reviewers of scientific papers. We will then review what are the fundamental rules to carry out a good review of a manuscript and what aspects of it we should focus on. Later we will see what format a peer review report should have and how to write its different sections, as well as the options for its final resolution. We will pay special attention to commenting on the ethical aspects and the most frequent errors that are made in the evaluation of manuscripts. Finally, we will recognize what the fundamental limitations of peer review are, and we will end by proposing some suggestions for their improvement. Our ultimate goal is to stimulate researchers –and authors– to go one step further and undertake the challenge of being peer reviewers of scientific manuscripts.(AU)

RESUMO

After outlining the life and works of interpreter Yoshio Gonnosuke, this paper introduces the manuscript witnesses of his hitherto unstudied comparative Dutch-Japanese syntax written in the mid-1820s, which was modelled on Pieter Weiland's Nederduitsche spraakkunst (1805). This is followed by a closer look at the process of compilation and publication of Philipp Franz von Siebold's "Epitome linguae japonicae," of which only the first part was published in 1826. Evidence is provided to confirm Yoshio's involvement in this work and to suggest that Yoshio's syntax was in fact intended to form the core of its unpublished second part.

RESUMO

The appropriate plot effectively conveys the author's conclusions to the readers. Journal of Korean Medical Science (JKMS) will provide a series of special articles to show you how to make consistent and excellent plots more easily. In this article, we will cover pyramid charts. A pyramid chart is a simple yet popular tool for looking at the structure of a population by age and gender. Other variables can also be applied. This article helps researchers use these charts more easily by introducing effective tools and explaining how to use them.

Introduction: The finding of an eyelid ptosis in a manuscript of the xiii century raises the differential diagnosis of injury to the third cranial nerve. This nerve was not differentiated from the other oculomotors until the xvi century and only in the xix century a clinicopathological correlation was established for its paralysis. Aim: Describe the characteristics and differential diagnoses of an eyelid ptosis illustrated in the Book of Divine Works (1173) by Hildegard of Bingen. Development: In the mentioned work the nun Richardis of Stade is portrayed with her left eyelid drooping. Two conspicuous signs are described, ptosis and corresponding raising of the eyebrow. The deviation of the eye downward and outward is inferred from the shape that adopts the eyelid by the position of the eye and the curvature of the cornea. The picture is consistent with an isolated paralysis of the oculomotor nerve. The causes of ptosis are discussed: aponeurotic due to levator palpebrae dehiscence; myogenic, congenital and acquired; of the neuromuscular junction, and neuropathic, the latter being the most probable in this case and of a compressive mechanism. The nun’s unexpected natural death suggests a ruptured brain aneurysm. Conclusions: Richardis of Stade’s portrait shows an oculomotor paralysis centuries before its anatomy, function, and clinicopathological expression were known. Credit for this original description must go to Hildegard, whose medical vocation has long been recognized.(AU)

RESUMO

In this article, we employ simple descriptive methods in order to explore the peculiar behavior of the symbols in the Voynich Manuscript. Such an analysis reveals a group of symbols which are further analyzed for the possibility of being compounds (or ligatures), using a specifically developed method. The results suggest the possibility that the alphabet of the manuscript is a lot smaller, and steganographic type of encoding is proposed to explain the newly revealed properties.

(AU)

The most advanced organizations are decentralized, collaborative and adaptive. This gives them the ability to manage complex situations. Laloux calls these organizations Teal. The aim of this manuscript is to describe the process of implementation of the Teal management model in the Agència de Salut Pública de Barcelona (ASPB). There is a triple opportunity for innovation at the ASPB: political change towards a progressive government, the organisation is in a moment of massive renewal of its staff and there is a generational change that facilitates understanding the Laloux model, and the managers have a technical background with a long history in the organisation, which makes them aware of the organisation's capabilities. The process starts with the involvement of a small group of people (Llavor group) and it is then expanded (Planter group). As well as discussing the bases of the Laloux model, six working groups are formed (How to organise more effective meetings, Physical spaces, Spaces for reflection/trust, Time bank, Annual ASPB staff day, and Space for listening to the voice of ASPB workers) and informative workshops are organised for the whole organisation in which 67 people participated. In total, some 120 people from the organisation have participated in Planter group activities. The success of the first initiatives should help to ensure that the values and principles cultivated go beyond the frontiers of the projects to become a generalised style of management. (AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The author was asked to teach a new PhD course, Developing Literature Reviews. The course objective is to have students prepare a structured (e.g., integrative, systematic) literature review manuscript that is suitable for publication submission. METHOD: Course pedagogy and materials were created, including a novel literature review manuscript template. The template served as a guide for communicating essential section components of a rigorous and reproducible literature review manuscript and allowed for an iterative process and efficient faculty-student evaluation system to simulate the peer-review process. To measure student outcomes, standardized course evaluations were reviewed, and the number of students who were successful in disseminating manuscripts was recorded. RESULTS: Students' standardized course evaluations were high. Eighteen students published integrative or systematic literature reviews as first author. Eleven students have presented peer-reviewed abstracts at scientific conferences. CONCLUSION: The template successfully facilitates PhD student dissemination. The Doctor of Nursing Practice student pedagogy may also benefit from the template. [J Nurs Educ. 2021;60(2):111-115.].

RESUMO

Immigration has been considered a common human behavior, but it is usually the result of severe conditions that force people to leave their countries. For specialized physicians who have invested years of study, training, hard work, and money to establish a successful career, the decision to leave behind everything to start over is as difficult as for the rest of the people. Adapting to a new country requires a good deal of patience, persistence, and resilience to reinvent oneself, exploring and developing new areas, plus using knowledge and experiences previously acquired. This paper reflects the anxieties, fears, and hopes of a dermatologist driven by the dynamics of a migratory process. The reflections are framed with verses of the goddess Fortune, extracted from a medieval Codex, as a way to compare how Fortune's whims can change circumstances to keep us moving upward and downward during our lives.
